For reasons we have yet to understand, ladybug species distribution around the world is changing. These lovely insects, with their distinctive colours and patterns, are showing up in places they’ve never been before. In some areas of the world, once common species are dwindling, and in other areas, rare species are flourishing. It’s a mystery that scientists want to solve, because ladybugs provide important, natural pest control.
The Lost Ladybug Project is one way to try to figure out the problem. For this project, researchers want you to get outdoors and take as many ladybug pictures as you can. After checking out the how to guide, and the ladybug field guide you can upload your photos here. Project organizers say that they’re happy to receive multiple photos to aid in identification, and that even telling them you looked for and didn’t find ladybugs in your area is useful.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking to learn more about these fascinating creatures, you can make use of the many free resources on the Ladybug Learning page. Have fun!
